New web design for Twitter
Twitter has ended the year with a major redesign for both its main interface and its apps.
The aim of the new design is to bring a unified user experience to all of its offerings.
Whilst iPad users are yet to benefit from the new app design, it has launched for iPhone and Android smartphones.
The redesign focuses on a brand new profile and a simplified navigation menu, which appears on the left hand side of the page.
The menu offers users easy access to their followers, the users that they follow, their lists and recent images.Recent tweets appear on the right hand side of the page.
Twitter’s new look also brings its users a new interface that centres around three foundational elements – Home, Connect and Discover.
The Home section embeds photos and videos within a users’ feed, in a similar vein to Facebook. It also features conversations that result from tweets.
The Connect tab shows users their mentions, replies and retweets, while the Discover tab features trending hashtags and topics that have been tailored to users’ interests and locations.
Experts say that the new design closes the gap between Facebook and Twitter even further.
Facebook, meanwhile, have taken a cue from Twitter by converting user profiles to a Timeline feed. Timeline is soft launching this month, with users opting in to the service before it becomes compulsory in 2012.
