Microsoft creates new role for head of devices and social media

Microsoft has created a new role of head of devices and social media for its UK portal MSN.co.uk.

The computing giant has appointed Darren Waters to the role. Waters currently works as the social media editor for BBC Wales and will join Microsoft on 31 October.

Waters will lead on MSN UK’s devices vision and strategy. This will include the building and maintaining of MSN UK’s user communities in its key channels and social media sites.

He will report directly to Pete Clifton, MSN UK’s executive producer.

Clifton said:  “I am delighted to welcome a great talent like Darren to Microsoft. His vast experience garnered during his time at the BBC stands him great stead for this new role and I am excited about the impact he will have on our MSN business in the UK.”

Waters added: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining MSN UK and helping deliver some of the best multimedia content on the web to millions of users.

“There’s no more exciting place to work than in the field of mobile devices and social media, and MSN UK has great plans for taking its content into new and exciting areas.”

The news confirms the growing importance of the mobile internet and by extension, web design in this area.
