Ten apps rule world of Android

Nearly half of all Android activity can be traced back to just ten apps.

According to new research from Nielsen Smartphone Analytics, the ten most popular apps account for 43% of all smartphone usage. The top 50 apps make up 61% of all usage, meaning that those outside of the top ten are struggling to compete in a crowded space.
Nielsen are set to reveal which Android apps have made the top ten in a free webinar on 15 September, leaving industry experts guessing as to which apps have made it.

However, it is possible to search for apps in order of popularity in Android Market’s website, in the same way that you can in the Apple App store.

As of 24 August, the ten most popular free Android smartphone apps were Facebook for Android, Google Maps, YouTube, Angry Birds, Skype, Dragon, Fly!, Angry Birds Rio, WhatsApp Messenger, Barcode Scanner and Racing Moto.

Meanwhile, the ten top paid-for apps on the same date were My Country, Paradise Island, Minecraft – Pocket Edition, CoPliot Live Premium UK + 1, DocumentsToGo Full Version, PowerAMP Full Version, Live Holdem Poker Pro, Tap Fish, Geocaching and CoPilot Live Premium Europe.

Although free apps are more likely to appear in the top ten, some of the top paid-for apps might appear in Nielsen’s list as well.
