UK’s grandparents get new social networking site

Social networking is usually viewed as the preserve of the young – but that’s all set to change. Gransnet is a new social network launched by the creators of Mumsnet, the massively influential network aimed at the UK’s mums.

The site, which launched last week, is aimed at bringing Britain’s 14 million grandparents together online, giving them the chance to discuss grandparenting, lifestyle and other matters on its Mumsnet-style interactive blogs.

A message posted on the Mumsnet homepage reads: “Tell your mothers, mothers-in-law, fathers, aunts, great-aunts … Gransnet has gone live and we hope it’ll become for grandparents what Mumsnet is for parents – an invaluable online space where you can discuss everything from relationships to hobbies, and news to culture.

“Feel free to have a mosey around and spread the word. It’ll do wonders for inter-generational harmony.”
The site already has backing from two major sponsors.

Nintendo is sponsoring Gransnet’s life and style section in order to position gaming as something older generations can do to keep the brain and body active.

Meanwhile, Pearson, the worldwide education company that owns the Financial Times, is sponsoring the learning section of the site. Content it will provide will include online yoga and photography courses.
