SEO poisoners jump on bin Laden bandwagon

Never let it be said that SEO scammers aren’t news-aware. Within just four hours of the news of Osama bin Laden’s death going public, SEO poisoning attacks were launched across the internet.

SEO poisoning attacks involve cyber criminals exploiting weaknesses in users’ computer security settings in order to direct their search queries towards websites that are coded with an iframe script to redirect the user to malicious websites carrying viruses and other threats.

The websites on which the scripts are placed usually take on the guise of news or other useful, alluring or topical website.

The Osama-based SEO poisoning attack websites resulted from an image search topped by must-read headlines such as “Osama bin Dead Awhile” and “Is Osama bin Laden Dead?”, teamed with pictures of the notorious terrorist.

Hapless users who clicked on these links were taken to a website offering fake anti-virus software called “Best Antivirus 2011”. This tricked them into entering credit card information and paying a fee for the fake computer-cleanser.

The SEO poison attacks were detected by antivirus firm Kaspersky Lab.

In a blog post on Monday, Fabio Assolini from Kaspersky said: “As always, when big news appear in the press the bad guys start black hat SEO campaigns in popular search engines trying to lure users to install rogueware.

“It’s not different this time, with the top news about Osama’s Bin Laden death being everywhere. The bad guys were quite fast and started to poison searches results in Google Images.”
