UK companies neglect search engine optimisation, research shows

Recent research has shown that many UK businesses are not using search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques to improve their website’s position in search engine rankings.

According to a recent survey by Fasthosts, approximately 41% of businesses do not use search engine optimisation. Meanwhile, a quarter of those firms questioned said that they felt paying SEO professionals to optimise their website would not be cost effective.

In an age when the need to have a significant online presence is of paramount importance for many businesses in order to stay competitive, these figures are startling. Without optimising a website for the search engines using keyword rich content and other techniques, websites are unlikely to achieve high search rankings, meaning that they are effectively losing out on business to their competitors.

The research also revealed that over a quarter of businesses do not use online methods to attract customers and boost sales, while almost half of all small firms do not have an email contact form.

At the same time, the extent to which UK consumers rely on online resources when making purchases was revealed. 38% of those questioned said that they use information found on social media when making product choices. This contrasts with figures which show that only 23% of businesses use social networking to bolster their online presence.
