Blue arrow on Google search results

Some of us are seeing a blue arrow pointing to the top Google search result. It looks like this and frankly looks more annoying than anything else.

It’s also on PPC results…

It’s using this code:

<span id=”knavm” style=”padding-top: 0px;”>►</span>

What’s that all about?

Edit: Apparently, it’s all about making instant faster. Sounds reasonable. Use the up/down keys to navigate results for quick navigation around the page.

I’m still not sure I like it. Unless you know what the arrow is for, it looks like Google is highlighting/recommending the first result. What do you think?

It’s part of Google adding keyboard navigation to the results (try the up and down keys). Since they’re saving you a whole 200 milliseconds in getting your results I guess they decided to save you another 200 by not needing to go from your keyboard to your mouse.

Ah, got it. I’d tried the tab key but that just made it disappear. Up and down keys from now on. Thanks!

I don’t like it. If they must have it can they at least provide an option to turn it off?

I know it doesn’t appear unless you are in google instant, but I liked google instant, and now I know longer wish to use it if this blue arrow is going to stay.

I think that with all the money Google has they could come up with new ideas.

It’s always been possible to scroll through the results using the up/down keys. That’s how I have always read them. But now it’s annoying as it jumps from result to result in a jerky fashion. I want to turn it off!

Its rubbish and I hate it, I like to scroll the web page using arrows. With this it just jumps and you lose your place

To disable this, go to http://www.google.com/preferences
At the bottom of the page under “Google Instant”, choose “Do not use Google Instant”
    Click on “Save Preferences”
