Yahoo! joins Microsoft

Yahoo! reached a key milestone in their search engine alliance with Microsoft last week as vital back-end functions of Yahoo! Search were transferred over to the Microsoft Bing platform. This is the first stage in Yahoo!’s long-term plan to improve the overall relevance of organic search results and attract a larger audience.

Currently, the change only affects organic search results, but it is intended that paid search will follow by the end of the year, with all of Yahoo!’s online marketing service users switching to Microsoft by 2012.

The Yahoo!/Microsoft search alliance agreement will impact the way businesses treat their SEO for the Yahoo! Search engine and the company are recommending that those responsible for their company’s SEO take three simple steps to ensure their organic rankings are not affected by the transition.

•    Companies are advised to review their organic search rankings at the earliest possible opportunity, because now that the results are powered by Bing, any differences in ranking on keywords should be apparent.

•    Consequently, you may wish to amend your paid search campaigns to compensate for any anticipated changes in organic referrals.

•    Spend time with Bing. The engine has a whole host of webmaster tools available, which will tell you everything you need to know about optimising for the Microsoft platform.

As a result of the alliance, it’s estimated that 30% of all search results on Yahoo! will now come through Bing. Preparing the ground work now will make your business more adaptable to the bigger changes that are sure to come into play later on.
